MADISON – Dane County Executive Melissa Agard is proud to join the American Association of Zoo Keepers (AAZK) in recognizing National Zoo Keeper Week 2025 by honoring the dedicated animal care professionals at the Henry Vilas Zoo.

“Behind every healthy animal and inspiring zoo experience is a team of highly skilled, deeply compassionate professionals who show up 365 days a year, in rain, snow, or shine,” said County Executive Agard. “Our keepers at the Henry Vilas Zoo are educators, caretakers, and conservationists. Their work reflects the very best of Dane County’s commitment to animal welfare, sustainability, and public education.”

Held annually during the third week of July, National Zoo Keeper Week shines a spotlight on the critical work of zookeepers across the country. At the Henry Vilas Zoo, these professionals care for animals from around the world, engage the public in environmental stewardship, and contribute to global conservation efforts.

“The animals at Henry Vilas Zoo receive exceptional care thanks to the knowledge, skill, and commitment of our animal care staff,” Agard said. “We’re fortunate to have such experienced and dependable professionals serving the people and animals of Dane County. From preparing nutritious meals and designing enriching habitats to mentoring future generations, their work has a lasting impact.”

The Henry Vilas Zoo, one of only a few admission-free, community-supported zoos in the nation, continues to be a beloved and nationally recognized institution, due in large part to the expertise and dedication of its animal care team.

“We are deeply grateful for the keepers whose hard work makes everything at the zoo possible,” Agard said. “Their contributions are essential to the health of the animals, the strength of our educational programming, and the experience of every visitor who walks through the gates.”
