MADISON — As June approaches, Dane County Executive Melissa Agard joins communities across the nation in recognizing Pride Month and honoring the resilience, diversity, and contributions of LGBTQ+ individuals in Dane County and beyond.

“Pride Month is a time to celebrate love, identity, and progress, but also to reflect on the work that remains,” said County Executive Agard. “The roots of this celebration are grounded in resistance and persistence; from the Stonewall Uprising nearly 55 years ago to today’s ongoing efforts for equity and inclusion.”

While Pride Month is a joyous occasion, it also serves as a solemn reminder that many in the LGBTQ+ community; particularly people of color, trans individuals, and those who are gender non-conforming; continue to face discrimination and barriers to safety, healthcare, housing, and opportunity.

“We must center those whose voices have too often been pushed to the margins, even within the movement itself,” Agard said. “True pride means ensuring everyone has the freedom to live authentically and without fear.”

Dane County is proud to support policies and initiatives that uplift LGBTQ+ residents, including inclusive healthcare access, nondiscrimination protections, and strong partnerships with community organizations. The County Executive’s Office reaffirms its commitment to advancing equity and standing with all LGBTQ+ individuals, during Pride Month and every month.

“As we raise the progress pride flag, let it be a symbol of both celebration and commitment—to justice, to inclusion, and to the future we are building together,” Agard added.
