MADISON, WI – Dane County Executive Melissa Agard today recognized and honored the dedication and contributions of the Dane County Highway Department in conjunction with National Work Zone Awareness Week, observed April 21–25, 2025.

This year’s theme, “Respect the zone, so we all get home,” underscores the importance of safe driving practices in work zones to protect both workers and motorists.

“Our highway workers are the backbone of Dane County’s infrastructure,” said County Executive Agard. “They brave challenging conditions year-round to ensure our roads are safe, clear, and well-maintained. Their commitment keeps our communities connected and our economy moving.”

The Dane County Highway Department is responsible for maintaining over 500 miles of county roads, including snow removal, pothole repairs, and infrastructure improvements. Their efforts are vital to public safety and the efficient transportation of goods and services throughout the region.

National Work Zone Awareness Week serves as a reminder of the risks highway workers face daily. From 2019 to 2023, there were over 10,600 work zone crashes in Wisconsin, resulting in 64 fatalities and more than 3,800 injuries. Speeding, tailgating, and distracted driving are leading causes of these incidents.

“Every driver has a role to play in ensuring the safety of our highway workers,” Agard emphasized. “By slowing down, staying alert, and minimizing distractions in work zones, we can prevent tragedies and honor the service of those who maintain our roads.”

In recognition of Work Zone Awareness Week, Dane County encourages residents to participate in “Go Orange Day” on Wednesday, April 23, by wearing orange to show support for highway safety.
