Today, Dane County Executive Joe Parisi and Mayor of Middleton Gurdip Brar announced the completion of University Avenue’s $1.5 million construction project. Construction on University Avenue began in late April, spanning from Cayuga Court to Park Street in the City of Middleton. The project included city repair of water and sewer, new traffic signals replacement, major intersection improvements at Parmenter Street, new concrete curb, and hot mix asphalt pavement.
“As Dane County grows, it is important that we continue upgrading our roads to maintain public safety,” said County Executive Parisi. “These improvements to University Avenue mean safer travel for drivers and pedestrians and a more robust infrastructure for Dane County moving forward.”
“A road improvement project like this doesn’t just happen,” said Mayor of Middleton Gurdip Brar. “It took partnership with the County, and with St. Bernard Parish. It took cooperation from the business community, emergency service providers, downtown residents and commuters. Most of all, it took planning and designing and hard work from a team of dedicated professionals who just want to make things better.”
The cost of this project totaled $1.5 million, with Dane County and the City of Middleton jointly funding the roadway improvements. Despite the significant rain events that occurred this year, the project opened less than two weeks beyond its scheduled opening of July 4. Beginning in November, the city will take over jurisdiction of the roadway.
This opening completes Dane County’s joint venture with the City of Middleton to reconstruct portions of University Avenue. The effort began in 2017 when the eastern portion of University Avenue from Park Street to Allen Boulevard underwent construction. New features included an on-road bike path, along with replacement of the road’s old curbs, gutters, and deteriorated concrete pavement. The $3 million project was equally funded by Dane County and the City of Middleton.
